The following model explains how people move through change.

Model of Human Change Process

When change occurs, humans experience:

  • Heightened stress
  • Uncertainty
  • Diminished Productivity

As change becomes accepted, humans:

  • Regain sense of Direction
  • Learn new Skills & Roles
  • Begin to work in a new way

The 4 Phases of Change usually happen in sequence:

  • Humans can move through the Phases quickly or slowly, and can often get stuck in one phase.
  • In order to perform effectively, humans must get to the Commit Phase.
